ANTH 341 - Archaeology of Complex Societies

This course presents the concepts, methods, and evidence that archaeologists use to reconstruct the emergence of complex human societies, including cities, states, and empires. A comparative perspective is employed to discuss prehistoric societies from around the globe, including Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Cultural traditions and social practices related to social complexity are explored, such as social hierarchies based on kinship, gender, class; writing and record-keeping; art and technology; belief systems; trade and exchange; and colonialism. Not applicable to the upper-division Archaeology requirement for the Anthropology major.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of GE Golden Four (A1, A2, A3, B4) with a C- or better (A1 can be taken concurrently), completion of lower division GE D coursework and at least 45 units.
