MATH 103 - Ethnomathematics Unit(s): 3 This course examines the mathematics of many indigenous cultures, especially those of North and South America, Africa, and Oceania. It will examine the use of mathematics in commerce, land measure and surveying, games, kinship, measurement of time, navigation, data storage, and other topics. The mathematics involved includes number bases, probability, geometry, number theory, lattice theory, and many other topics of interest in modern mathematics. Satisfies the Area B4 GE requirement for mathematics. This class is recommended for liberal arts students who are interested in studying other cultures.
Grading: GRD Prerequisite(s): satisfaction of ELM requirement.
