MATH 431 - Applied Partial Differential Equations

Topics covered in this course will include Introduction and Classification of PDEs, Mathematical models in physics and engineering, Theory and solution of quasilinear first-order PDEs, Power series solutions of an ODE, The Sturm separation theorem for second-order linear equations, Second-order linear and nonlinear PDEs including applications, Fourier series, boundary-value problems, Fourier and Laplace transforms, numerical methods and solutions, and approximation of solutions using the finite-difference method. Not repeatable for credit.

Prerequisite(s): Grade of C- or better in MATH 241 and (MATH 180 or CS 115), or consent of instructor.
