The Liberal Studies Degree Completion Program offers a flexible route to a Bachelor of Arts degree for those who have completed junior transfer requirements and cannot attend regularly scheduled classes on the Sonoma State’s main campus in Rohnert Park, CA.  Students take a variety of courses in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences that are taught by SSU faculty and scheduled evenings, weekends, and online for the working student.

The Liberal Studies - Ukiah Program is designed for students based in Mendocino or Lake County, and requires that students be residents of Mendocino or Lake County for acceptance. For students in other regions, Sonoma State offers similar programs in Napa, Solano, and Marin.

Liberal Studies graduates will have well-developed skills in:

Requirements for the Major


The major consists of 50 units of coursework in a variety of disciplines, organized into five areas.

  • Arts/Humanities: 15 units
  • Social Sciences: 15 units
  • Natural Sciences: 6 units
  • Culminating Portfolio: 4 units
  • Electives: 10 units

Special Studies (SSCI 495) and a maximum of 6 units of internship (SSCI 499) can be included as electives. 

Students must earn a C- or better in all courses applied to the Liberal Studies major.

Application and Admission


Applications for the Liberal Studies Program are accepted for both Fall and Spring semesters from applicants who meet Sonoma State University application deadlines and the admissions requirements for the program. Applicants can submit their materials through Cal State Apply.
