POLS 360 - Politics of Modern Ireland Unit(s): 4 This course looks at the evolution of the modern Irish state, starting in 1845- the first year of the Great Hunger. We examine the history and role of British rule on Irish identity and language, the impact of emigration and demographic shifts during the 19th century, the influence of the Catholic Church on Irish politics, the Easter Rising, establishment of the Free State, the Irish civil war, partition of Northern Ireland, Constitution of 1937, the reproductive repression of the 20th century, and the ways in which the Republic Ireland has since evolved into one of the most progressive states in Europe.
