NAMS 125 - Native American Communications Unit(s): 3 This course is designed to help students develop the verbal and non-verbal skills needed to deliver effective and compelling oral presentations, as well as active listening skills that will enhance their ability to listen appropriately to another’s oral communication. Through an exploration of Native American oral histories, testimonies, autoethnographies, other forms of narrative, and the relationships between rhetoric and meaning, the course will focus on the ways in which Native American traditional memorization and storytelling techniques can be adapted to academic and civic speaking situations. Students will improve their skills in speaking, writing, and listening and will gain insight into the ways in which the sharing of personal and community narratives has helped Native communities cope with the legacies of colonial genocide and other intergenerational traumas.
