Programs Overview
The Department of Art, Media, and Communication at Sonoma State University fosters creative, critical, and professional growth by integrating visual arts, media production, communication theory, and real-world practice into a dynamic academic experience. Our degree programs emphasize creativity, technical mastery, and thoughtful engagement with contemporary culture and communication.
Art Studio, BA
Creative Practice and Visual Innovation
The Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio provides students with a comprehensive foundation in artistic practice, art history, and conceptual development. Students engage in studio courses that span a wide range of media — including ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and works on paper — while developing both technical proficiency and a distinctive artistic voice. The curriculum encourages experimentation, critical reflection, and personal expression, with opportunities to pursue focused emphases and build a cohesive, professional portfolio. Coursework blends foundational principles with advanced studio exploration and art historical context to prepare graduates for careers in the creative industries or advanced study.
Communication Studies, BA
Media Literacy, Production, and Impact
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies equips students with the skills to understand, create, and critique media in an ever-evolving digital landscape. The program offers a robust curriculum that explores communication theory, media history, ethical issues, and practical media production. Students refine written, oral, and multimedia communication skills while gaining hands-on experience through video production, journalism, public relations, radio and broadcast labs, and digital media outlets. Internships and media lab participation ensure that students apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and build professional portfolios.
Cinematic Arts and Technology, BA
Film Production and Creative Media
The Bachelor of Arts in Cinematic Arts and Technology prepares students for careers in the film, video, and entertainment industries through a blend of creative and technical coursework. Emphasizing hands-on experience in camera operation, audio production, editing, post-production, and media project development, this program helps students build professional, portfolio-quality work while grounding them in film and media history, theory, and industry ethics. Students also complete a media industry internship and a culminating creative media project in senior seminar, enhancing readiness for roles in production, directing, cinematography, editing, screenwriting, and related fields.
