Leadership Certificate


The leadership certificate will help develop both current leaders and those who want to expand leadership goals. The certificate will provide leadership development based on the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE): career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, equity and inclusion, leadership, professionalism, and teamwork. Additionally, this certificate will give students practical personal leadership and organizational leadership development.

Program Learning Outcomes


According to Executive Order 806, the following are examples of learning goals that may be achieved in certificate programs (non-exhaustive): 

  1. Increasing knowledge in a career area by updating a student’s knowledge about the career, providing advancement opportunities, introducing students to new developments, or providing added information based on student needs and interests; 
  2. Providing initial knowledge designed for entering a new career, or making a significant change in an existing career, such as moving from a nurse to a nurse practitioner; 
  3. Providing knowledge for new and emerging career opportunities; 
  4. Providing opportunities to explore the possibility of moving to different careers; 
  5. Providing an organized set of knowledge within any discipline, based on student interests, such as in different areas of art, music, literature, mathematics or science; and 
  6. Providing other programs based on identified or anticipated student needs and interests. 

The following are the learning outcomes for the certificate itself mapped onto the possible learning outcomes from EO 806.

  • Develop practical leadership and career readiness skills that can be utilized in college and career, such as interpersonal communication, group communication, critical thinking, and team building (LG 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Create an inclusive personal leadership plan with SMARTER (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely, Evaluated, Revised) goals (LG 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Critically evaluate organizational strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (LG 1, 2, 3)
  • Apply SMARTER framework to an issue within your organization (LG 5)
  • Identify the appropriate change management strategy for your organization (LG 5)
  • Create a blueprint for continuous improvement within your organization (LG 5)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness, difference, and diversity of a global society, as future leaders (LG 6)
  • Understand the role of communication in being an inclusive and effective leader (LG 1, 2, 3, 4)
